Ingredients
Scale
Cake
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/8 cup vegetable oil
- 1/4 cup natural peanut butter (ensure it does NOT contain xylitol)
- 1/2 cup plain, unsweetened applesauce
- 1/2 cup pure pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie mix)
- 1 egg
Frosting
- 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1/4 cup peanut butter
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure it is properly heated for baking the cake evenly.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and baking soda to distribute the leavening agent evenly throughout the flour.
- Mix Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, blend vegetable oil, natural peanut butter, applesauce, and pumpkin puree until smooth. Then add the egg and mix thoroughly to incorporate it into the wet mixture.
- Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir just until combined, avoiding over-mixing to keep the cake tender.
- Prepare Baking Pan: Grease an 8-inch round or square baking pan with oil to prevent sticking and pour the batter evenly into the pan.
- Bake the Cake: Place the pan in the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes. The cake is ready when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and the surface springs back when pressed gently.
- Cool the Cake: Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool completely on a wire rack before removing from the pan and frosting.
- Make the Frosting: In a small bowl, mix the plain Greek yogurt and peanut butter until smooth and creamy.
- Frost the Cake: Once cooled, spread the frosting evenly over the top of the cake. Refrigerate if not serving immediately to keep the frosting fresh.
Notes
- Do NOT use peanut butter that contains xylitol or birch sugar, as it is toxic to dogs. Always check the ingredient label carefully.
- Use plain, unsweetened applesauce to avoid added sugars or artificial sweeteners harmful to dogs.
- Make sure to use pure pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling, which contains spices unsafe for dogs.
- Store the frosted cake in the refrigerator and serve within a couple of days for freshness.
- This cake is intended as a treat and should be given in moderation as part of a balanced diet.
