Ingredients
Scale
Tofu
- 14 to 16 ounces extra-firm tofu, drained
Marinade
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 3 stalks green onion, thinly sliced, plus more for garnish
- Juice of 1 small lemon
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 ½ teaspoons fresh ginger, grated
- ¼ cup water
Cooking
- 2 tablespoons oil (vegetable or canola oil recommended)
Instructions
- Prepare the Tofu: Cut tofu into ⅓ inch thick triangular slices and arrange them in a large casserole dish. Set aside while preparing the marinade.
- Make the Marinade: In a medium bowl, thoroughly mix together minced garlic, soy sauce, thinly sliced green onion, lemon juice, brown sugar, grated fresh ginger, and water to create the marinade. Pour this mixture over the tofu slices, making sure they are well coated. Let the tofu marinate for a minimum of two hours or overnight for a deeper flavor. Remember to flip the tofu halfway through marinating to ensure even absorption.
- Pan-Fry the Tofu: Heat a large sauté pan over high heat. Add enough oil to coat the bottom of the pan. Place tofu slices in a single layer without overcrowding. Cook each side until browned—about 2-3 minutes on the first side and 2 minutes on the other.
- Cook with Marinade: Pour the leftover marinade from the bowl into the pan with the tofu. Allow the tofu to cook in the marinade until it darkens slightly, approximately 45 seconds. Flip each piece and repeat this step on the other side to glaze evenly.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove the tofu from the pan and garnish with the reserved thinly sliced green onions. Serve immediately while warm.
Notes
- Extra-firm tofu works best for pan-frying as it holds shape well.
- Marinating overnight results in a richer flavor.
- Use a non-stick or well-seasoned sauté pan to prevent sticking.
- You can adjust the sweetness by modifying the brown sugar quantity.
- Serve with steamed rice or stir-fried vegetables for a complete meal.
